Clarke University invites nominations and applications for the position of dean for the college of arts and sciences. As a Catholic liberal arts and sciences institution with professional programs, which provides an outstanding education for caring and responsible participation in a global world, we seek an innovative and ambitious dean who lives our values and our mission.

Reporting directly to the vice president for academic affairs, the dean is responsible for the academic activities of the College, including curricula, assessment, supervision of department chairs, and support of University strategic planning implementation. The dean should have a strong understanding of the role of the arts and sciences in the career preparation and holistic education of students as well as an appreciation of the challenges faced by institutions of higher education in the United States. This dean will take the lead in assuring high-quality, flexible, and innovative programs in the arts and sciences that are mission-focused, market-responsive, and attuned to the distinctive needs of all learners. Primary responsibilities include:

  • overseeing undergraduate curriculum in the college of arts and sciences, including the development of new programs and program review
  • supporting curricular revision
  • translating ideas into actions that expand Clarke's arts and sciences presence in the University, community, and strategic partnerships
  • overseeing academic advising, first-year programs, academic support services, and career services
  • ensuring that undergraduate policies are implemented fairly and in a manner consistent with their intent; reviewing and acting upon requests for exceptions to policies and regulations
  • overseeing academic scheduling in collaboration with the dean of the college of professional and graduate studies, the director of Compass (general education) curriculum, and the registrar
  • monitoring the academic progress of first-year students and students on academic probation
  • serving on a number of committees and task forces, including Curriculum and Assessment Committee, Assessment and Program Review Committee, Academic Advising, Academic Innovation Team, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Compass Advisory, and Student Concerns and Support
  • managing budgetary expenses
  • supervising department chairs and staff associated with the college of arts and sciences

Expected Qualifications & Experience

  • Terminal degree in a discipline represented in or closely affiliated with the college of arts and sciences
  • Three or more years of experience in higher education leadership
  • Clear alignment with the values of Catholic higher education, which at Clarke are rooted in the Core Values of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM): to envision a community of freedom, seeking God; education, seeking wisdom; charity, seeking communion; and justice, seeking social justice.
  • Accomplished record of developing and implementing innovative educational programming
  • Broad knowledge of the disciplines in the arts and sciences and the ability to foster collaboration across content areas
  • Experience with operational management of academic programs, curriculum development, and program assessment and review
  • Ability to interpret market research and trends and assist instructional programs accordingly
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to shared governance
  • Strong listening, speaking, and writing skills to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external audiences
  • Ability to make effective decisions, take independent action, and be responsible and accountable
  • Ability to think critically, organize complex tasks, solve problems, and understand and interpret university policies for diverse constituents inside and outside the university
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the senior leadership team in academic affairs
